Local communities

97% of our employees are hired locally in the 80 countries where we operate. By establishing long-term partnerships, Sodexo seeks to play an active role in local community development.

Local community development

We will support local community development in all the countries where we operate by 2015.

CANADA – Sodexo is working with aboriginal communities to develop fair, harmonious relationships. These relationships have developed into 30 creative partnerships with investments in training and development programs.

On Remote Site projects, Sodexo’s workforce comprises 63% aboriginal community members on average, with some sites employing as many as 95%. For the fourth time in July 2010, Sodexo received a gold medal for Progressive Aboriginal Relations (PAR) from the Canadian Council for Aboriginal Business.

SOUTH AFRICA - Over the past few years we have improved the Quality of Daily Life in the underprivileged local communities through various actions such as donating groceries to an after school care centre, preparing and serving meals at a shelter for the homeless in downtown Johannesburg and distributing over a 100 grocery hampers to pensioners in the rural village of Embo in KZN.

In 2013 Sodexo were Corporate Sponsors for the World Chefs’ Tour Against Hunger “Climb Kilimanjaro” initiative. Apart from sponsoring the gear for the team of 6 of South Africa’s most awarded and recognised chefs, 20 cents of each meal sold in our accounts were donated to WCTAH fund over a period of two months.

We will promote and contribute to the economic and social development of the local communities in all the countries we operate by 2020.

Since 2010, Sodexo offered learnership opportunities for unemployed youth in South Africa. Over the past three years, more than 30 unemployed youth obtained a National Certificate in Professional Cookery which is recognized and accredited on the National Qualification Framework. Almost all of these learners were offered permanent positions within Sodexo and are now contributing to the social and economic welfare of the local community.

PERU - Sodexo strives to procure products and services in the localities where it operates. The Sodexo Association for Sustainable Development identifies local companies and producers and helps them progress through training and technical assistance in hygiene, health and management. Once their products meet Sodexo standards, they are certified to sell their products to all Sodexo sites and in other markets. In 2009, $ 1.4 million in supplies was sourced from local communities.
