  • Discover Jo’s inspiring journey with Sodexo’s EBRG PRIDE and how her experiences exemplify the importance of celebrating Pride Month and fostering diversity in the workplace.

One thing Jo Brunell loves about Sodexo is the company’s dedication to inclusivity, diversity, and empowering employees to be their authentic selves.

“We really want people to bring their whole selves to work, live authentically, and as a community, we are very passionate about creating an environment where all employees belong,” Jo exclaims.

Jo, Senior Manager of Digital Experience, joined Sodexo’s Employee Business Resource Group (EBRG) PRIDE in 2020. Joining the EBRG has opened her eyes to more possibilities and a supportive community she can turn to.

Reflecting on her time with Sodexo, Jo shares, “IJo Pride Blog Internal Photo.png have been working at Sodexo since 2002 and when I decided to join PRIDE in 2020, it made my experience even better. I gained more motivation, education, and expanded the resources available to me. It was beyond motivating to be around people who are really accomplished and passionate about something.”

Jo’s passion for Pride and her dedication to the EBRG led her to be selected as the EBRG’s Communications Chair. In this role, Jo creates all communications materials for the EBRG members, as well as specific announcements for all Sodexo employees.

PRIDE has provided Jo with a community of supportive individuals she can rely on whenever needed. Discover more about Jo’s journey in Sodexo’s EBRG PRIDE and the significance of Pride Month as she shares her experiences below.

Why did you join our EBRG PRIDE?

I joined PRIDE after my nephew came out. I was really surprised when he told me he was afraid to come out and had only confided in four people, as I believed things were better for young people. Learning that young people still fear showing their true selves motivated me to take action. Joining PRIDE was an opportunity for me to learn more and educate myself.

Now, PRIDE has become an integral part of my life, and I cannot see myself without it. I have a lot of friends in the Pride community who are proud and confident in who they are. It’s important to keep educating ourselves and continue striving to create a world where everyone can be their whole selves.

How has PRIDE impacted you both personally and professionally?

I always considered myself an ally, but it wasn’t until I joined PRIDE that I learned what it means to be a true ally. It means educating yourself, listening to others, lifting others up, and most importantly, action. My time as a PRIDE leader has brought me fulfillment both inside and outside of work. I have also gained a family; the relationships I’ve been able to foster are ones that I’ll cherish forever. My fellow leaders all inspire me to do better in a million different ways.

How has PRIDE helped you with connections and networking?

I have met so many amazing people in PRIDE and other EBRGs in jobs that I didn’t even know existed in Sodexo (and beyond). PRIDE gives me the opportunity to have meaningful conversations and connections with people I might not have otherwise crossed paths with. It has really shown me (even after 20+ years) how varied the opportunities within the company are.

Why do you think EBRGs such as PRIDE are so important for both employees and the company?

The philanthropic aspect of being in an EBRG is something that I find extremely rewarding. The goal of EBRGs is to make our communities better and to also make Sodexo better. When we educate ourselves on the history, lives, and struggles of those different from us, we can collectively make a difference in the world (and at Sodexo) for everyone.
